Search Engine Strategy (originally published on 11-16-02 but worth reading over again as much of the same information still applies today)

This week I would like to mention a general rule of thumb I recommend for webmasters asking my advice on the search engines.

One of the largest errors I see repeated over and over by webmasters trying their talents at the search engines for the first time is targeting to general of a term.

By doing some research on specific terms or combinations of certain terms, your chances of better placement are drastically improved as compared to a generic term that might have thousands of others trying to get that same high placement.

Although it is true that the search engines themselves vary quite a bit in their requirements and criteria that they base their listings on, by targeting a more specific word or phrase, you will have less competition. In addition, the varied factors that the different ones use, such as meta tags or specific code tags, all will be affected by the more specific term use.

If you do a small amount of searching, you can even find meta tag and keyword generators that although are not perfect, they can give you a good basis to start your optimization with.

Playing the search engine game can be a challenge, but if you do some research and experimentation, over a period of time they can provide a very nice addition to your income levels that your sites generate.
